48 Hours in Mexico’s Riviera Maya

The Riviera Maya is a stretch of Caribbean coastline in Mexico that is home to some of the most beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, and stunning natural wonders in the world. It’s a paradise for those who love to explore new cultures, relax in the sunshine, and eat delicious food. If you’re planning a trip to the Riviera Maya and only have 48 hours to spare, here’s an itinerary to make the most of your quick trip.

Day 1: Morning

Start your day off with breakfast at La Cueva del Chango in Playa del Carmen. It’s a charming outdoor restaurant surrounded by trees and lush vegetation that will make you feel like you’re eating in the middle of a jungle. Try the huevos rancheros or traditional Mexican chilaquiles, and wash it down with their famous juice blends.

Day 1: Afternoon

After breakfast, take a taxi to the Tulum Ruins. These ancient Mayan ruins are perched on a cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Spend a few hours exploring the site, learning about the Mayan culture and history, and take plenty of photos of the stunning views.

Day 1: Evening

After exploring the ruins, head to the nearby town of Tulum and have dinner at Hartwood. This popular spot is known for its farm-to-table cuisine and delicious cocktails. Try the grilled octopus or roasted cauliflower, and finish your meal with one of their famous house-made desserts.

Day 2: Morning

Start your second day with a visit to one of the cenotes in the area. Cenotes are natural swimming holes filled with crystal-clear fresh water. The Riviera Maya is home to several cenotes, but our top two recommendations are the Gran Cenote and the Ik Kil Cenote.

Day 2: Afternoon

After your refreshing dip in the cenote, head to Akumal Beach. This beautiful beach is known for its calm waters and abundant sea turtles. Rent a snorkel and swim out to the reef to see these majestic creatures up close. Be sure to respect their space and not touch them.

Day 2: Evening

For your final evening in the Riviera Maya, head to the town of Puerto Morelos and have dinner at La Sirena. This casual seafood restaurant is located right on the beach and serves delicious ceviche, grilled fish, and margaritas. After dinner, take a stroll along the beach and enjoy the warm ocean breeze.

With this itinerary, you’ll be able to experience the best of the Riviera Maya in just 48 hours. Of course, there are many more things to see and do in the area, so if you have more time, be sure to add them to your list.
